Gravity Wars returns for it’s 5th year!

September 15, 2025 By Laura Hulley

Our annual ropes comp is back! We’re excited to host Gravity Wars for the 5th year, welcoming competitors from throughout BC. This is a Sport Climbing BC difficulty competition, where climbers will compete to qualify for provincials (or just for fun!). The gym will be closed for the day for standard climbing.

Who can compete?

There’s a bunch of different categories to choose from, for all ages and experience levels! Choose the category that’s right for you:

Recreational
Are you a beginner/ intermediate climber looking for a fun challenge? The rec category is for you! There is no cost for SCBC registration in the rec category, you only pay entry to the event. The REC event is split into the following categories:

    • Recreational: For people climbing up to 5.11a. You will compete on top rope.
    • Experienced: For people climbing 5.11b and above. you will compete on lead.

Competitive
The competitive category is geared towards athletes looking to challenge themselves at the highest level. Routes are harder, and set to test athletes to their limit. The Competitive event is split into the following categories:

    • Youth D – Born in 2014 or 2015
    • Youth C – Born in 2012 or 2013
    • Youth B – Born in 2010 or 2011
    • Open – Born 2009 or earlier

When is the competition?

Gravity Wars is on the 27th September, at Ground Up Climbing Centre in Squamish BC. Check out the SCBC website for the full day schedule: SCBC Website.

Is the gym open as normal?

The gym will be CLOSED on 27th September to anyone not registered for Gravity Wars. We will be routesetting in the days beforehand, so some of the roped area will not be available at certain times.

How do I register?

All registration is done through the SCBC website. To register:

  • Register for an account.
  • Go to your profile on the SCBC website.
  • Fill out the waiver.
  • Add “Ground Up” to your list of clubs on your profile.
  • Add the event to your cart.

If you face any issues, try signing out then back in, or send us an email: community@climbgroundup.com.

How do I volunteer?

You’ll need to sign up via the SCBC website! Volunteering is fun day with a great team. It’s also an opportunity to see the behind-the-scenes of a competition environment. We provide the lunch and snacks 🙂

Can I just come to spectate?

Absolutely! There’s no cost to spectate, you’ll just need a waiver if you haven’t been here before. You can do this at the gym, or online beforehand. Check out the schedule for the best time to come: schedule
